Yacine Chaïb is set to join MC Alger. Journalist Kadi Nazim reports that the 21-year-old left-back has signed a three-year contract with the Algerian giants, ending a tense week-long standoff with fierce capital rivals USM Alger.
For days, the transfer saga played out like a genuine Algiers derby, only this time, the battle was waged in boardrooms and over phone calls, not on the pitch.
Both clubs, among the country’s biggest, chased the same signature. Each worked the phones to Lyon, probing for the right formula to land their target.
USMA made the first move. Sources close to the club say discussions with Chaïb and his representatives began as early as last week. The Soustara side had identified left-back as a priority heading into the new season, and saw the Lyon academy graduate as a solution for both immediate needs and long-term ambitions.
But in transfer battles, momentum can vanish in an instant.
MC Alger, according to reports, surged from behind to close the deal. The Doyen proved more convincing after both clubs sought terms from Lyon, and are now finalising the arrival of a player widely regarded as one of the most intriguing young talents to emerge from the OL academy in recent years.
Chaïb’s rise has been about patient development, not overnight stardom. He spent nearly his entire footballing education at Lyon’s academy, a pedigree that quickly caught the attention of scouts in Algiers. Last season, he was loaned to Belgian side RWDM Brussels, where he logged regular first-team minutes and gained the kind of maturity that comes from being tested in a foreign league.
That loan spell now looks like the turning point in his career. It sharpened his profile as a modern full-back: energetic up and down the flank, comfortable building attacks as well as defending. That blend of athleticism and composure made him a top target for both USMA and MCA.
There’s a national team angle here too. Chaïb has already been called up by Rafik Saïfi to the Algeria U23 squad, part of a wave of young binational talents the Algerian federation is eager to integrate. A move to a club competing at the top of the Algerian league, with European continental football on the horizon, only boosts his case for continued international recognition.
For Chaïb, the decision was clear. Staying at Lyon offered no guarantee of regular senior football. Joining an ambitious, high-profile Algerian club gives him responsibility and first-team minutes he might not have seen in France.
USMA will feel the sting. They opened talks first, identified the need first, and still lost out. MC Alger, bold as ever in the market, swooped late and got their man.
